CUNY Students in the PSC’s New Ad: We’re Standing Up for Fair Pay for Our Professors

The PSC has launched a multi-week TV and radio campaign to press New York’s leaders and the CUNY administration for a contract that improves pay and conditions for all faculty and staff and ends the near-poverty pay of CUNY adjuncts. Click here to see the television ad.

Photos of RedforEd at CUNY

At least 3,000 PSC members wore REDforED on May 1 to welcome Chancellor Félix Matos Rodríguez and delivered a call to action for him to begin his tenure by negotiating a contract for faculty and staff. Here is a Facebook album with all of the photos that were emailed to the union. Many more photos were shared by members themselves on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Search the hashtags #CUNYContractNow and #REDforEd to see. More than 1,000 PSC members also sent the chancellor an e-letter on his Day One demanding action on the contract. Tell Your Legislators to Close the TAP Gap

The enacted State budget failed to close the TAP Gap—a shortfall of millions of dollars at each CUNY senior college caused by the tuition colleges must waive for students receiving TAP awards. But Assemblymember Deborah Glick and Senator Toby Ann Stavisky, the higher education chairs, are working now to pass stand-alone legislation to begin to close the gap, which will amount to $86 million at CUNY next year. You can help by sending this letter to your representatives in Albany.

Adjunct 3-Year Appointment Settlement Agreements

The PSC recently reached agreement with the CUNY administration to settle two class-action grievances concerning implementation of the three-year adjunct appointments. Both are victories for the union. Click here to learn more about the settlement on jumbo courses and the settlement on courses offered by programs.

NYS Senator Biaggi Joins PSC to Demand a Fair Contract

Last Friday Lehman College faculty, staff and students joined NYS Senator Alessandra Biaggi at a press conference to demand a fair contract for the PSC. The press conference followed a speech that Senator Biaggi gave at the invitation of the Lehman administration. During the speech, the Senator spoke powerfully about the need to invest in CUNY and settle the PSC-CUNY contract. Click here for a tweet with video of Senator Biaggi’s statement at the press conference.

Were You Denied Public Service Loan Forgiveness?

In October the American Federation of Teachers, the PSC’s national affiliate, filed a class-action lawsuit against Navient, a student loan servicer, for misleading borrowers in public-service professions to stop them from enrolling in the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. The AFT is now exploring further legal action. If your application for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program has been denied and you would be interested in being considered as a possible plaintiff, fill out this confidential survey.

AFT Resources for Student Loan Borrowers

Thirty-two million Americans are estimated to be eligible for student debt forgiveness. Yet only 874,000 are actually enrolled in student debt forgiveness programs. The AFT has a website where borrowers can learn about federal programs that can help them to lower their monthly payments and, in some cases, even have their debt forgiven.

Labor Goes to the Movies Presents Thelma and Louise –Fri., May 10

The union’s film series will continue its exploration of the theme “Sex & Power” with a screening of Thelma and Louise (Ridley Scott, US, 1991) this Friday, May 10 in the PSC Union Hall, 61 Broadway, 16th floor. Some male critics derided this outlaw couple film it as a crude “feminist tract” while others saw it as “a regressive male-buddy film in female drag.” Doors open at 6:00 PM. Four dollar suggested donation. Light refreshments available. Watch the trailer.
