The PSC Delegate Assembly has voted to make Jumaane Williams the PSC’s first endorsement of the 2021 NYC elections.

“The PSC is proud to endorse Jumaane Williams for Public Advocate. Jumaane is an outspoken advocate for CUNY and an indefatigable voice for racial and economic justice. As a CUNY graduate himself, he understands how CUNY can change lives. He shares the PSC’s commitment to a fully funded City University for the whole people of New York. PSC members admire his political independence and courage. Especially now, Jumaane Williams is an important political voice in citywide office,” said PSC President Barbara Bowen.

Williams has deep roots with CUNY and with the PSC going back to his days as a student activist at Brooklyn College. He graduated from Brooklyn College with a BA in political science and Masters in urban policy. As a member of the City Council, Williams was a vocal advocate for PSC members, CUNY students and the CUNY community colleges. He was also leader in the Council’s advocacy to end the City’s “stop and frisk” policing policy, a priority for CUNY students and the PSC.

In his first term as Public Advocate, Williams released a devastating report on the systemic underfunding of CUNY. “The City and State are at a critical juncture where they can either build upon their investment and bolster CUNY’s mission of an equitable education for all or oversee the erosion of one of New York City’s most venerable institutions,” the report argued.
