This Week in the PSC

This Week in the PSC (04.19.17): Pay Increases April 20

Apr 19, 2017

The final salary increase of 1.5% under the 2010-17 Memorandum of Agreement between PSC and CUNY will take effect on April 20, 2017. If you are a full-time employee at a senior college, you will receive the contractual increase of 1.5% in the bi-weekly paycheck dated 4/27/17. This paycheck is for 4/13 through 4/26. You will see the value of the 1.5% increase for the days 4/20-4/26. If you are a full-time employee at a community college, you will receive the contractual increase of 1.5% in the bi-weekly paycheck dated 5/5/17. This paycheck is for 4/23 through 5/6, and you will also receive the value of the 1.5% increase for the workdays between 4/20 – 4/22 in the 5/5/17 check.

Teaching adjuncts have been paid a “blended” hourly rate throughout the Spring 2017 semester, which “blends” the April 20, 2017, increase with the April 20, 2016, hourly rate. If you are a teaching adjunct, you will see the full increase in your hourly rate when you next teach after the end of the spring semester. If you are in a different part-time title – non-teaching adjuncts, adjunct CLTs and continuing education teachers – you will see a 1.5% increase effective April 20, 2017 in the paycheck that covers that period. Read the FAQ on contract increases from CUNY.

PSC Members to Testify About Teaching Load and Adjunct Faculty Pay

More than 60 PSC members will testify about the need to raise adjunct salaries to $7,000 per course and implement the contractual agreement on full-time faculty workload at the next CUNY Board of Trustees hearing. The hearing will take place this Wednesday, April 19, at 5:00 PM at the Borough Hall in Queens (120-55 Queens Blvd, Kew Gardens). The deadline to register to testify with the Secretary of the Board of Trustees has passed, but all are welcome to attend this public hearing. The PSC will post and share members’ testimony in the days following the hearing.

May Day Moratorium
Teach Resistance

On May Day, May 1st, a day for workers, PSC members will join a nationwide university moratorium in resistance to assaults on knowledge, research, our students’ safety and our own. At CUNY, teaching faculty can observe the moratorium by integrating into our classes an examination of the impact of Trump’s policies as they are relevant to your area of study. Professional staff can integrate into their relevant conversations with students discussion of how new federal policies affect students. Please sign up here to let us know that you will participate. Here is a drop box with a preliminary set of articles to use as discussion starters. Please upload suggested readings to it that you plan to use in your class. Since Trump’s administrative policies impact every walk of life, they offer an opportunity for study and critique regardless of discipline. Here’s aflier to help spread the word.

People’s Climate March

The PSC is sponsoring buses for members to travel to the People’s Climate March in Washington on April 29 at reduced cost. We will leave early in the morning and return in the evening. For more information and to purchase tickets, click here. If you cannot join the PSC for the March in Washington, please join with local climate activists for the Staten Island Climate March, Saturday, April 29, at 12 PM at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Boardwalk on Staten Island. You canfind more details and RSVP here.
