REBUILD CUNY, REBUILD nEW YORK

Full-time Faculty: the Key to a Great University

Full-time faculty are the heart of a university. A university’s academic reputation rests on the work they do—not just teaching, but also research, curriculum development, student advising, recruitment of the next faculty generation.  At CUNY, years of disinvestment have undermined this work, allowing it to fall on the shoulders of fewer and fewer people.

The budget gap at CUNY has been filled by restructuring the faculty workforce, and replacing a full-time faculty with a part-time one.  The majority of our courses are now taught by part-timers.  Although most are extraordinarily dedicated and effective teachers, part-time faculty are hired solely as teachers; they are not compensated for holding office hours in which to meet students or for other duties expected of full-time faculty.  At some point, it becomes impossible to do it all; the students – and the reputation of the university suffer.

The PSC proposes that this year’s budget fund 450 new lines as part of a three-year plan to restore the 1,500 faculty positions needed to fulfill the University’s Master Plan. The FY 2003 cost for rebuilding a quality instructional staff will be $50.9 million.
