Labor Goes to the Movies: Persepolis

This female coming of age story, adapted from the graphic novels of Iranian Marjane Satrapi, uses traditional hand-drawn animation to give the film a distinctive look, retaining the novels‘ flat, minimalistic style of simple outlines, lending a universality to the characters as they move through Marjane’s highly personal story.

Event Date:
Friday, February 16, 2018 – 6:00pm

This female coming of age story, adapted from the graphic novels of Iranian Marjane Satrapi, uses traditional hand-drawn animation to give the film a distinctive look, retaining the novels‘ flat, minimalistic style of simple outlines, lending a universality to the characters as they move through Marjane’s highly personal story. Through the experiences of Marjane’s educated and politically active family and friends, the film traces the history of Iran in the twentieth century: political repression under the Shah, the acts of resistance of the 1979 Iranian Revolution, religious repression under the ayatollahs, and the horrors and deprivation of the Iran-Iraq war. The film follows Marjane’s personal struggles as she travels to Austria to pursue her education in safety and returns to Iran in her search for home and acceptance. Winner 2008 César (French Oscar) for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best First Film.

Screenings take place on Friday evenings at 6:00 pm. $4 suggested donation. Space is limited! Light refreshments served before each screening.
