2012 Election Results

President Barack Obama was re-elected to a second term in yesterday’s election, after winning important states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire and Virginia. He also won the popular vote by a small margin. PSC members phone banked union households to mobilize support for President Obama in New Hampshire.

The make up of the House of Representatives hasn’t changed much in this election, but Democrats gained several Senate seats, including Elizabeth Warren’s win over Republican Scott Brown in Massachusetts and Chris Murphy’s win over Republican Linda McMahon in Connecticut. PSC members made hundreds of get out the vote calls in both races, and teamed up with members of UFT and other unions for a big get-out-the-vote labor walk to elect Chris Murphy (Here’s the photo album on Facebook.)

NYSUT/PSC endorsed challengers Grace Meng and Sean Patric Maloney and NYSUT/PSC endorsed incumbent Tim Bishop won their elections for seats int he House of Representatives. Democrats had a net gain of one House seat in New York State.

In the race for the State Senate, Joe Addabbo Jr., an incumbent from Queens that NYSUT/PSC endorsed, kept his seat. George Latimer, another NYSUT/PSC endorsed challenger, won his race for a State Senate seat in Westchester. The New York Times reports that Democrats believe they will win in the State Senate, but several Senate elections are still too close to call, and a caucus of four independent Democrat senators may still decide control of the State Senate.

Results for close races for offices in the State Senate and Congress are posted on spreadsheets on the Albany Times Union Capitol Confidential blog.
