Take Action Against the Dangerous Tax Plan

The House of Representatives has voted for a tax plan that is a massive giveaway to the rich and big corporations. The Senate votes next week on its own version.

Please call Senators Schumer and Gillibrand now. The Capitol switchboard number is (202) 224-3121. The switchboard asks you to press 1 for the Senate or press 2 for the House. After you chose, you enter your zip code, and you will be connected to your representative’s office. Tell them to oppose the tax reform bill.

The Senate bill would totally eliminate personal deductions for state and local taxes, student debt interest, and home mortgages deductions. It would lead to huge shortfalls in state budgets—which could lead to big cuts in New York State funding for CUNY. And see the article in the New York Times on two less-known provisions of the bill that would be especially punishing for our members: a new tax on tuition waivers received by college employees and a tax on graduate student tuition waivers.

The bill amounts to a geographic redistribution of wealth—with New York City residents among those hit hardest—as well as a redistribution by class. And it would destroy the Affordable Care Act, doing what the Congress couldn’t do through a straightforward vote.
