STATEMENT ON THE LEGISLATURE’S IMMINENT RETURN
TO ALBANY TO ADDRESS “TAX REFORM”

New York—The Legislature and the Governor have an opportunity to enact real, progressive tax reform and to spare millions of low- and middle-income New Yorkers from the continuing injustice that is built into the current State budget. For the sake of the 99% in New York—including thousands of CUNY students—they must not squander their chance. They must retain the “millionaires’ tax” or implement a new tax on the 1%.
STATEMENT ON ALBANY’S “FRAMEWORK” AGREEMENT ON CUNY AND SUNY
New York—While all the details of Albany’s emerging “framework” for funding CUNY and SUNY are not yet available, we commend the legislative leaders and the governor for recognizing the need to stabilize funding for CUNY and SUNY. Such stability is long overdue. As the agreement is finalized, we call on Albany to ensure full protection of annual funding and necessary cost increases.
New Union Contract for CUNY Research Foundation Workers
New York—Employees of the CUNY Research Foundation working at New York City College of Technology, LaGuardia Community College and the CUNY Graduate Center have unanimously ratified their first union contracts. The three largely identical contracts were approved by a combined margin of 177 to zero during a vote that spanned from late April to May 23. The Board of Directors of the CUNY Research Foundation voted to approve the contract Thursday.
AT MAY 12 TEACH-IN CUNY FACULTY TEACH ALTERNATIVES TO AUSTERITY
New York—More than twenty faculty and staff from the City University of New York gave lessons today at a massive teach-in on Wall Street, part of a major mobilization in Lower Manhattan organized by a coalition of community, labor, and progressive groups (OnMay12.org). Over 100 “classes” took place at the event, which also featured a march and rally and a host of creative and diverse actions throughout the financial district.
