“The State of Academic Freedom
at the City University Today”
A
Panel Presentation
Sponsored by the Retirees Chapter of the PSC
Monday, February 8th, 2010,
1 to 3 PM at the PSC Union Hall
With
the growing corporatization of American higher
education today, and the changing structure of the
academic workplace, the academic freedom of the
faculty faces serious new challenges. Increasingly
in the last decade administrators have centralized
power, placing curbs on faculty speech on university
policy, and excluding meaningful faculty
participation in institutional governance. Together
with the growing use of contingent faculty
unprotected by tenure or due process, these changes
threaten the academic freedom of all college and
university teachers, and change the very nature of
the university in a democratic society.
The
panel with Gary Rhodes and Manfred Philipp will
explore this issue both within the national context,
and within the ambit of the City University.
All
members are invited and encouraged to participate in
the question and answer session following the
presentations.
