Debates on peer review and alternative approaches to the dissemination and evaluation of research and scholarship are not confined to the humanities. In mathematics and the natural sciences, Internet-based alternatives to traditional academic journals, such as the Public Library of Science (PLoS), MathOverflow or ResearchGate, are playing a growing role – and that role is the subject of active debate. Similar discussions are unfolding in the social sciences.
