CUNY DAY
TOOL KIT
Here are some suggestions of actions
you can do on your campus to celebrate
CUNY Day. Below each action, you will
find links to supporting materials.
ACT NOW – ON CAMPUS LOBBYING: Set
up computers in a public space on
campus so that students and faculty
can access ACT NOW throughout the
day.
TESTIMONIAL WALL: Put large
sheets of paper and markers up in a
high traffic area on campus and let
students and faculty write and draw
what CUNY means to them.
POSTCARD CAMPAIGN: Set up tables
where students and faculty can fill
out postcards to Pataki and sign up
for lobbying days in Albany.
POETRY SLAM: Have a poetry
contest or an essay contest where
students write about the importance of
CUNY. The winners can be read at a
CUNY Day event.
CUNY DAY ART GALLERY: Have
students in art classes do an
assignment related to the importance
of CUNY and display these on CUNY
Day.
CLASSROOM ACTION: Teach a short
lesson about the importance of CUNY,
the current budget, and how to
organize around these issues in
classes. These can be followed up
with an assignment related to CUNY
Day. (Shortly, we will
provide links to lesson plans, budget
information, tuition talking points)
STUDENT TESTIMONIALS: Have
students write short testimonials
about what the tuition hike will mean
to them personally and display these
throughout the campus. (Shortly,
we will provide links
to
tuition talking points)
SPEAK OUT: Invite students,
faculty and staff to speak out at CUNY
Day events about the importance of
CUNY to them personally.
PLAN A PERFORMANCE: Invite
students and faculty from Speech and
Drama Departments to develop skits
about CUNY to be performed on CUNY
Day.
INVITE AN ALUMNI SPEAKER: Invite
a graduate from your campus to speak
at a CUNY Day event. (Shortly,
we will provide a link to City Council and State
Representatives who are CUNY
graduates, listing the college or
colleges they attended.)
POSTER PRESENTATIONS: Have each
department make a poster highlighting
their particular strengths. These may
also want to highlight a department’s
importance to New York City. For
example, education departments may
want to illustrate how many NYC
teachers have graduated from their
program.
