Peace and Justice Committee

The PSC has reaffirmed its commitment to peace and justice and created a committee to work on these issues in a period framed by:

  • The events of September 11, 2001,
  • U.S. military actions in Iraq and Afghanistan,
  • New government initiatives, particularly under the Bush administration, that placed limits on civil liberties and intellectual inquiry, and
  • Federal funding priorities that favor "war and permanent militarization" and that mean "austerity for labor and disinvestment in education, health care, environmental safety and other human needs."

The committee has taken its work to the campuses and has, working with locals across the state and nation, pushed its NYSUT and AFT affiliates to take positions against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and to call for a reordering of U.S. economic priorities to direct more money toward education, jobs, healthcare and housing, and less toward these wars.

The committee has spearheaded PSC participation in peace and justice rallies, demonstrations, conferences and actions that have linked issues of war abroad and economic injustice at home.
