PSC Project on CUNY and Race

The CUNY and Race Project is examining racial disparities in the academic workplace by investigating the career trajectories of CUNY faculty and professional staff over a 10-year span from 2000-2009. The project documents existing practices at CUNY as they relate to recruitment, hiring, retention, mentorship and promotion of faculty and professional staff. It also studies best practices and barriers faced by departments and work units as they make efforts to deepen diversity and inclusiveness.

Even as enrollments have climbed, austerity conditions have hampered the university’s efforts to increase diversity and progress has been disappointingly slow.

For this reason, the PSC has undertaken its own study (to be released next spring) which will include extensive quantitative data on trends in hiring, retention, promotion and tenure throughout CUNY from 2000 to 2009 and will document best practices at the college department level in each of these areas. We believe the union’s research will extend and deepen the university’s diversity efforts.
