Want to
save money on your commute on the NYC Transit System (buses and
trains)?
Thanks to union efforts, Transportation Spending Account (TSA)
is now available to all instructional staff at CUNY including
adjuncts and other part-timer staff. This benefit allows you to
pay for Metro Cards with pre-tax money. There is a very small
administrative fee, but anyone who uses public transportation in
New York City more than a few times per month will benefit from
enrolling in TSA. Application forms are available at your
campus Human Resources Department. Just fill it out, return it
to Human Resources, and you will receive a debit card in the
mail which you can use in any MTA Metro Card Vending Machine.
Additional information available at
www.cuny.edu/transitbenefit.
How it
works:
1.First,
request an application for the CUNY Transportation Spending
Account from your Human Resources Department at you college.
Fill it out and return it.
2.After
a few weeks, JPMorgan Chase Bank will send you in the mail a
Commuter Savings Card with instructions on how to activate the
card and create a PIN number. This card acts like a debit card
at any ATM vending machine.
3.The
requested amount of money will be withdrawn from your paycheck
before taxes (saving you money). This amount will be placed in
your account automatically. You can get information about this
account in the usual manner (telephone or website) as indicated
on the back of your card. You are charged a maintenance fee of
$1.80 the first of each month.
4.After
money has been placed into your account, all you need do is use
it as an ATM debit card in any vending machine. When the screen
asked what type of payment, select ATM debit card and
then it will ask for your PIN number. You can use any amount
you choose at any time for any type of MTA card. There is no
deadline by which you must use the money in your account. At
the end of the year, your money is carried over to the next
year. You can fill out a form to cancel or adjust the
withdrawals at any time (or suspend withdrawals for summer
months).
