The Delegate Assembly of the Modern Language Association passed a resolution opposing Pathways at their January meeting in Boston. The organization serves a membership of 30,000 English and foreign language faculty in 100 countries. According to Inside Higher Ed, the resolution “criticiz[es] the CUNY administration at the City University of New York, arguing that administrators infringed on faculty rights in creating and requiring a curricular system to ease transfer from the system's community colleges to its four-year institutions.” It goes on to support a moratorium on implementation of the new curriculum. The resolution now goes to the MLA’s executive committee for review and to the full membership for a vote. (Read more on the Inside Higher Ed website.)

Adjunct health insurance through the PSC-CUNY Welfare Fund has been extended for the month of January. We have made significant progress in the past few weeks on achieving permanent health insurance for eligible adjuncts. In order to make sure that there is no break in coverage, the Trustees of the PSC-CUNY Welfare Fund voted to extend the existing coverage through the end of the fall semester on January 27, 2013.

For many members of the instructional staff, December 1st was the date when colleges sent out notices of reappointment and non-reappointment. Notice of the decision for full-time faculty in their first full year of service must be received by April 1. For full-time faculty in subsequent years of service, notice of decision must be received by December 1. Adjuncts must receive written notice of reappointment or non-reappointment by December 1 in the fall semester and May 1 in the spring semester.

A group of PSC members and staff have been trained to help with the FEMA registration process. Our statewide affiliate, NYSUT, has a Storm Relief Fund that you may qualify for, and the union has information about other programs that can help with repairs and rebuilding, financial losses, food assistance, counseling, etc. After the PSC receives your form submission, we will contact you with the relevant resources and information.

On November 21 President Bowen sent the following letter to adjuncts on the health insurance plan.

Once again, adjunct health insurance through the PSC-CUNY Welfare Fund has been extended. The Trustees of the PSC-CUNY Welfare Fund voted unanimously to extend the existing coverage through the end of the calendar year, December 31, 2012. We had expected the final review of the proposed new coverage to be complete by the end of this month, but the complexity of the proposal and the crisis caused by Hurricane Sandy have created additional delays. Coverage for eligible adjuncts, under the terms currently in place, will continue through December 31, 2012, and will be provided through the PSC-CUNY Welfare Fund.
